The King Sejong Institute Foundation has recently released updated and revised textbooks through Nuri-Sejonghakdang (https://nuri.iksi.or.kr). A total of 62 textbooks (including multilingual editions) have been released, including “KSI Practical Korean for Immediate Learning (formerly KSI Korean Conversation)”, “KSI Korean for Dummies (formerly Cyber Korean),” and “Korean Language for the Visually Impaired.”

The “KSI Practical Korean for Immediate Learning” is an updated version of “KSI Korean Conversation,” published in 2018. The update was based on feedback from local KSIs and various Korean language education settings. Significant updates include clarifying complex instructions, presenting multiple standard words based on their actual usage frequency, and enhancing illustrations in accordance with gender impact assessment. A new “Vocabulary and Grammar” booklet is also included as an additional supplement.

In addition, volumes 1 and 2 for beginner learners have been translated into a total of 15 languages, addressing feedback that the first edition's English-only format created a high barrier to entry for beginner learners. The updated textbooks reflect the evolving socio-cultural environment and educational needs since the first edition's publication. “KSI Korean for Dummies” is a revised and streamlined version of Cyber Korean, developed in 2020. The textbook is designed to be lightweight for portability while maintaining the same amount of learning content for use in both in-person and online classes (www.iksi.or.kr).

Meanwhile, the “Korean Language for the Visually Impaired” series has expanded with volumes 3-6, in addition to the existing volumes 1-2. Developed as a combination of large-print and braille, the books cater to both low-vision and blind individuals and are available in various alternative formats such as e-book, PDF (large-print book), BRF (electronic braille file for braille books/braille information devices), and MP3 (audiobook). The supplementary materials include Korean Braille Code (KBC), tactile resources on Korean culture, and answers to practice questions to enhance learning.

“Every year, the Foundation promotes various content development projects,” said Lee Hai-young, President of KSIF. “We will continue our efforts to provide timely materials that are essential for Korean language education.”
