On October 9, Hangeul Day, the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Vietnam (Ambassador Park No-wan) announced that it would award the Korean Ambassador’s Citation to Hanoi University of Social Sciences and Humanities (VNU-USSH), and Hanoi University of Languages and International Studies (VNU-ULIS).

KSI Hanoi 1 and 2, operated by the two institutes, were designated the first KSI in Vietnam in 2011, and contributed to disseminating Korean language and culture for the past ten years, with the number of learners reaching 13,000.

VNU-USSH, running KSI Hanoi 1, is where the first Korean Department was established in Vietnam in 1993. It is a symbolic university in Korean Studies where the number of students of KSI operated jointly with Busan University of Foreign Studies reaches 954 a year, with the number of students of Korean Studies of approximately 300.

VNU-ULIS, operating KSI Hanoi 2, is where the first graduate course in Korean language was opened in Vietnam in 2018. The school leads the dissemination of Korean culture, with 1,230 students per year at KSI.

Ambassador Park No-wan said, “Vietnam has the largest number of KSIs in the world, and a region with a lot of interest in Korean education. We will continue to expand our support by operating local educator training courses, developing Vietnamese textbooks, etc., so that KSI can play a significant role in disseminating Korean language and culture in Vietnam.”

Currently, 22 King Sejong Institutes are operated in Vietnam, and about 12,000 students take Korean classes. There are 37 universities that have Korea-related departments, with about 17,700 students in them. In February 2021, Vietnam added Korean as the first foreign language elective in elementary, middle, and high school, laying the foundation for Korean education to local youths.
