134 KSIs Worldwide Get Ready to Celebrate the 574th Hangeul Day

134 KSIs set to host events to commemorate the 574th Hangeul Day
Calligraphy class, K-pop class, and more with some events held online due to COVID-19

The King Sejong Institute (KSI) branches around the world are set to host a wide variety of events to commemorate the 574th Hangeul Day.

Every year, experience programs and competitions are held at KSI locations worldwide on Hangeul Day to demonstrate the beauty and excellence of Hangeul, the Korean alphabet, and this year is no different.

The KSIs in Guatemala City, Guatemala; Ho Chi Minh City 4, Vietnam; Qiqihar, China; and Cebu and the City of Balanga, Philippines will be hosting calligraphy events. There will also be some unique events such as ‘Explaining My Favorite Phase in Hangeul’ at KSI Tubingen, Germany. The main KSI branch in Indonesia will be hosting a poetry recitation competition online.

There will be cultural events that will allow participants to get a better feel of Korean culture in general. In Vientiane, Laos and Yerevan, Armenia, participants will get a chance to experience Korea’s martial art, taekwondo. In Ulan-Ude, Russia; Tallinn, Estonia; and Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, films related to Hangeul such as “MAL-MO-E: The Secret Mission” and “The King's Letters” will be screened to shed light on the history and significance of the Korean alphabet.

27 KSI locations will be holding Hangeul Day events online. The branches in Yakutsk, Russia and Sokuluk, Kyrgyzstan, for example, will be hosting online K-pop competitions. KSI Campinas in Brazil, in particular, is organizing programs that can better assist those planning to study in Korea, with former international students sharing their experiences studying in Korea and related information sessions. A wide range of other events will take place online including writing a letter of appreciation to King Sejong, experiencing Korean cuisine, and drawing on handheld fans.

The King Sejong Institute Foundation (KSIF) strives to display the beauty of Hangeul and the charms of Korean culture on Hangeul Day annually. Even after the commemorative day, there are plans to organize diverse Korean language and culture programs for learners.
