Special Documentary Pioneers of Namdo
> 33-year history of Korean language education at KSI Tashkent 1 spotlighted on KBS Gwangju’s Pioneers of Namdo
> Diverse stories of KSI Tashkent 1 members introduced, with focus on Director Hur Seon-haeng

On December 30 and January 7, KSI Tashkent 1 in Uzbekistan and its director, Hur Seon-haeng, were featured on the New Year’s special glocal network documentary Pioneers of Namdo broadcast by KBS Gwangju. The documentary spotlighted five individuals from the Namdo region who are promoting Korea around the world.

It followed director Hur Seon-haeng’s 33-year journey as a Korean language educator in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, where he has worked to promote Korea. It also portrayed the growth of KSI Tashkent 1 from its initial class of about 20 learners to graduating more than 8,000 students. Reflecting on his years of work, Director Hur said during the broadcast, “It wasn’t that I gave my students dreams; it was my students who gave me dreams and hope.”

The program also featured interviews with members of KSI Tashkent 1 who work alongside Director Hur. Garkusha Anna, a Russian-born cooking instructor at KSI Tashkent 1 and Director Hur’s spouse, shared her story of meeting Director Hur and her life introducing Korean culture in Central Asia. Through the stories of the institute’s teachers, viewers were also able to see the impact that Director Hur and KSI Tashkent 1 have had on Korean language education in Uzbekistan.

The program also showed Korean language classes at KSI Tashkent 1 as well as learners experiencing Korean culture firsthand. The Korean Food Cooking Contest and the Kimchi Festival held in December were introduced as representative cultural events at KSI Tashkent 1, demonstrating how Korean language education is expanding into Korean cultural activities. Shamitdinova Ugloy, who participated in the Kimchi Festival, said, “I was so happy to make kimchi myself instead of only seeing it at Korean restaurants. At KSI Tashkent 1, I love that we can enjoy Korean culture through various hands-on activities in addition to Korean language classes.”

Operations staff member Lee Sang-hoon shared his thoughts on the broadcast, saying, “Watching the director’s long-standing efforts to promote Korean language and Korean culture abroad come to light in this documentary gave me a great sense of fulfillment. It captured the cooking contest, the Kimchi Festival, and the sincere stories of learners and teachers all together, so it’s a meaningful record for everyone.”

This special documentary not only looked back on director Hur Seon-haeng’s 33-year journey as a Korean language educator in Uzbekistan, it also meaningfully captured a wide range of scenes from KSI Tashkent 1, including classroom instruction, cultural events, and interviews with teachers. In addition, it served as a valuable opportunity to document the ongoing efforts to promote the Korean language and Korean culture overseas and to share examples of cultural exchanges between Korea and Uzbekistan.
