> Supports stable entry and adaptation to Korea of seasonal migrant workers through KSIF’s special education programs
> Available for free download on Nuri Sejong Hakdang
King Sejong Institute Foundation (President: Lee Hai-young, hereinafter KSIF) developed “Easy Korean for Agricultural Workers” and “Easy Korean for Fisheries Workers” as Korean language education materials to help stable entry of seasonal migrant workers into Korea. They are available on Nuri Sejong Hakdang (https://nuri.iksi.or.kr).
Seasonal workers are foreign workers employed for short periods (5 to 8 months) during planting or harvesting seasons in agriculture and fisheries, where short-term intensive labor is required. They are invited to Korea according to the allocation size of seasonal workers for each region in the first and second halves of the year.
The released educational materials can be used in the special education programs of KSI in Southeast Asia and Central Asia, where there is a high demand for learning for seasonal workers. Considering the high interest in seasonal work in these regions, we provide 6 versions, including English, Vietnamese, Russian, Mongolian, Uzbek, and Kyrgyz, to enhance the convenience of teaching and learning.
<Easy Korean for Agricultural Workers>
These textbooks, divided into two categories based on the types of seasonal work, namely agriculture and fisheries, are designed to improve beginner-level proficiency by focusing on vocabulary and expressions needed in these job settings. Consisting of a total of 10 units, the textbooks concentrate on the learning content tailored to the characteristics of seasonal workers who stay in Korea for a short period.
▲Units 1 to 4 are titled "Daily Life," presenting situations encountered in daily life in Korea, while ▲ units 5 to 10 are categorized as "Work," which are further divided into agriculture and fisheries. In the "Work" units, situations encountered in agricultural and fisheries settings are presented, to help seasonal workers learn appropriate Korean through suitable dialogues and become familiar with life in Korea.
<Easy Korean for Fisheries Workers>
This education material focuses on practical language use rather than learning vocabulary or grammar-related language knowledge. The learners are exposed to various situations they may encounter in Korea. Additionally, considering that the seasonal labor environment is dominated by spoken language, speaking and listening tasks are strengthened.
Various supplementary materials are also provided. ▲Learners can practice essential vocabulary and expressions anytime, anywhere through vocabulary and expression books and audio materials. ▲Teachers can refer to the teacher"s guide on how to utilize educational materials and conduct classes, ensuring high-quality Korean language classes for seasonal workers.
President Lee Hai-young of KSIF stated, "As the inflow and attraction of foreign labor in various fields become increasingly important nationwide, KSIF will help reduce the linguistic and cultural differences experienced by seasonal workers in the early stages of their entry through these Korean language education materials and support their stable life."
