The King Sejong Institute Foundation (KSIF, president: Lee Hai-young) announced that it would support 2,500 Vietnamese youths with Korean cultural experience classes and teaching materials as part of its drive to promote Korean culture. The KSIF holds hanji craft classes for students who learn Korean at the Vietnamese middle and senior high schools that teach Korean as the first foreign language.

This project is a follow-up to the Vietnamese Ministry of Education's adoption of Korean as the first foreign language elective course in elementary, middle, and high schools in February this year. The KSI Center Vietnam drew up this project to respond to the hanji promotion policy implemented by Korea's Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in 2021, and to give opportunities to more Vietnamese youths who learn Korean in school to experience Korean culture.

The project involves 16 schools in Vietnam, including 4 middle schools, 9 senior high schools, 2 Korean language schools, and Danang University of Foreign Studies (the Department of the Korean Language established in 2021). As the hanji craft class was held online in December, the KSI in Vietnam sent the class material to each student by email.

The KSI Center Vietnam prepared thoroughly for this project for the quality of the hanji craft class. Above all, in November, the KSIs prepared a PowerPoint presentation on the hanji craft class for teachers and translated it into Vietnamese for distribution to the teachers of the institutions (16 schools) in advance so that they could apply the PPT presentation in class. Moreover, the KSIs offered a class observation to local teachers in order to meet the local needs.

Lee Kyu-rim, head of the KSI Center Vietnam,, noted, “While the number of middle and senior high schools that choose Korean as the first foreign language and want to teach Korean has increased exponentially, there is virtually little opportunity for students to experience Korean culture due to the COVID-19 pandemic this year.” He hoped that the cultural education class would help Vietnamese youths better understand Korea culture and cherish the fun memories of learning Korean in school.

Currently, over 12,000 people are learning Korean in 22 KSIs in Vietnam. The KSI Center Vietnam plan to continue expanding its Korean culture education project by holding Korean culture classes in Korean language schools, elementary, middle, and senior high schools, as well as colleges, in addition to KSIs, in 2022.
