Korean language education is evolving beyond everyday communication to support learners in achieving specific career paths and personal goals. According to the 2025 satisfaction survey of King Sejong Institute (KSI) learners, motivations for studying Korean range widely, from academic pursuits and employment to interest in Korean culture and migration. In line with such trends, Korean language education is also changing to help learners achieve specific goals beyond simple everyday interactions.
Furthermore, the number of international students in Korea has risen sharply, from 153,000 in 2020 to 253,000 in 2025. As a result, Korean language proficiency has become a critical factor in adapting to university life and academic performance.

In line with such trends, the KSIF has developed two new textbooks to support learners in pursuing their individual goals and career plans: “Korean for International Students” and “Korean for International Events.”
◇ From Preparation to Campus Life: “Korean for International Students”
“Korean for International Students” is a KSI textbook developed to build the Korean-language skills needed for university admission and academic success in Korea. It provides a step-by-step guide to the real-world academic journey of international students, including study abroad preparation, adjusting to life in Korea, attending lectures, giving presentations, and writing reports. By incorporating content tailored to university culture and academic requirements, the textbook enables learners to adapt smoothly to life on campus.

◇ Korean for International Events: Bringing the Workplace into the Classroom
“Korean for International Events” is a practice-oriented textbook designed for learners who work in or seek to enter the MICE* industry. Based on the National Competency Standards (NCS)*, it analyzes and reflects the key work processes of international events, including meetings, exhibitions, and conferences. It explores real-world situations such as registration assistance and customer service, providing task-oriented activities that enable learners to apply their Korean language skills directly in professional settings.

◇ Online Retraining Resources to Support Teachers’ Growth
Alongside these new materials, the King Sejong Institute Foundation (KSIF) has introduced additional online retraining content designed to strengthen the instructional and assessment capabilities of Korean language teachers. The newly revealed curriculum consists of three core courses: Utilizing “Sejong Korean Culture,” Utilizing “Sejong Business Korean,” and KSI Assessment Scoring Training (Speaking & Writing).

Utilizing “Sejong Korean Culture” and Utilizing “Sejong Business Korean” help teachers understand the learning objectives and applications of the textbooks for real-world classroom use. KSI Assessment Scoring Training (Speaking & Writing), on the other hand, focuses heavily on practice, allowing teachers to fully understand assessment criteria and strengthen their evaluation skills through scoring exercises.
The new content features lectures by the textbook authors and experts who participated in assessment development, providing both professional insight and practical relevance. It is delivered in three different formats— Knowledge, Simulation, and Dialogue—so that teachers can apply these methods in their own instructional and assessment settings.

Formats of Online Retraining Content for Korean Language Teachers
The new materials and online retraining content for Korean language teachers are available for free on the KSIF’s online learning platform, Nuri KSI. The KSIF will continue to strengthen practical resources that can be used directly in classrooms, in line with evolving learner needs and educational environments.
