Discussions Underway to Establish Korean Language Department at University of Nairobi
Formal deliberations are currently underway regarding the establishment of a department of Korean language at the University of Nairobi. On March 27, Kang Hyung-sik met with Vice Chancellor John Mande to review the Korean Studies Program, which has operated within the Department of Linguistics since 2013, and to discuss plans for establishing a fully independent department of Korean language. During the meeting, both sides focused on practical measures to improve the educational environment prior to launching the new department, including systematizing the Korean language curriculum and augmenting the faculty with specialized professors, establishing a Korean language learning resource center (the “Korean Corner”) on campus, and expanding support for language and cultural exchanges between Korea and Kenya. Vice Chancellor John Mande noted that the establishment of a Korean language department would serve as a catalyst to strengthen the academic and cultural bridge between the University of Nairobi and premier Korean institutions.

Avignon Festival Organizing Committee Announces Korean Performing Arts Selections
On April 8, the organizing committee for the 80th Avignon Festival announced the lineup. Among the selected works were nine Korean performing arts productions, including a staged reading based on We Do Not Part by Nobel laureate Han Kang, which is slated for the Cour d’Honneur stage of the Papal Palace.
This is the result of an international co-production between the Avignon Festival and the Seoul Performing Arts Festival. The cast includes French actress Isabelle Huppert and Korean actress Lee Hye-young, and it is scheduled to run from July 15 to 16. The lineup also includes three works by playwright Koo Ja-ha, the first Asian recipient of the International Ibsen Award, as well as Muljil, an audience-participation performance inspired by the lives of Jeju’s haenyeo divers, Island Story, based on the Jeju 4.3 Incident, and 1 Degree Celsius, which addresses the urgency of the global climate crisis. This marks the first official invitation of Korean performing arts productions to the Avignon Festival in approximately 28 years, since 1998, making it especially meaningful.
