Vietnam Introduces Pilot Korean Language Education in Public Kindergarten and Elementary School Curricula
On December 17, the Vietnamese government approved a new national education program aimed at strengthening foreign language education capabilities through 2035. Under this program, kindergarten and early elementary school students will be able to learn Korean systematically within the public education system through a pilot program that will introduce Korean, Chinese, Russian, French, German, and Japanese as optional languages for first- and second-grade elementary students. Beyond language instruction, the initiative also plans to adopt modern teaching methods that incorporate artificial intelligence and advanced educational technologies while simultaneously expanding teacher training and educational infrastructure.

Embassy of the Republic of Korea in the Republic of Iraq Holds Completion Ceremony for Korean Language Courses
On December 20, the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in the Republic of Iraq hosted a luncheon to celebrate the completion of its 2025 Korean language courses. The 2025 program was organized by the embassy for Iraqi youth and included a TOPIK preparation class, a beginner Korean class, an advanced Korean class, and more. Approximately 40 participants attended the luncheon, where they shared their experiences studying Korean and exchanged information about studying in Korea. During the event, Ambassador Lee Joon-il also announced plans to expand and continue the Korean language course program in 2026.

Sanssouci Palace in Germany Officially Introduces Korean Audio Guide
On December 15, Sanssouci Palace in Potsdam, Germany, began offering an official Korean-language audio guide service. A well-known German tourist destination that was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1990, Sanssouci Palace had previously provided audio guides in 11 languages, including English and French. Thanks to the Korean-Language Audio Guide Installation Project led by the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Germany and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Korean has now been added. Visitors can listen to Korean-language explanations of how 12 different spaces in the palace, including the galleries, the king’s study, and the library, were used.

Eight Korean Words Added to Oxford English Dictionary Published by Oxford University
On January 7, Professor Jieun Kiaer of the Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Oxford, who serves as a Korean language consultant for the Oxford English Dictionary, announced that eight Korean words had been added to the dictionary. The new entries are haenyeo, sunbae, bingsu, jjimjilbang, ajumma, Korean barbecue, and officetel. First published in 1884, the Oxford English Dictionary now operates as an online platform and is regularly updated. The inclusion of these Korean words is believed to have been influenced by the popularity of Netflix content such as When Life Gives You Tangerines and KPop Demon Hunters.
