> “KSI Vinh Hangeul Day Event” held in Vinh, Nghệ An, Vietnam

> Sharing Korean language and culture through Korean Calligraphy Contest and Korean Food Experience

On October 13, a Hangeul Day event was held by KSI Vinh in Vinh, Vietnam. KSI Vinh invited staff and students from Vinh Medical University located in downtown Vinh and held a Korean Calligraphy Contest and Korean Food (Bibimbap) Experience.

Tran Ba Tien, Vice President of Vinh University, remarked, “I sincerely congratulate you on the 577th Hangeul Day. We welcome the staff and students at the Medical University, and hope that the Korean language and culture will become more widely known in Vinh region through these two institutes,” In another congratulatory speech. President Le Van Nguyen, who attended as a representative of the Medical University, replied, “I hope that KIS Vinh will become the center for spreading the Korean language and culture in Vinh region.”

The first event on the program on this day was a “Korean Calligraphy Contest.” Although most of the staff at the Medical University, encountered Hangeul for the first time, they practiced writing diligently, with comments like, “The letters are so pretty and attractive.” After practicing, they each selected a word or a phrase they wanted for the contest, and the top-three received small gifts.

The second event on the program was “Korean Food Experience, making Bibimbap.” Participants listened to the explanation about bibimbap, and made and then tasted bibimbap themselves with the prepared ingredients. Many of the staff members enjoyed bibimbap for the first time on that day. Because there is no food in which rice is mixed in Vietnam, everyone enjoyed and shared the new kind of food.
One faculty member remarked, “I did not know much about Korea before, but through this event and the Korean food experience, I became very interested in Korea as well as its food culture.” This Hangeul Day event was especially meaningful because not only KSI Vinh participated in it, but also staff members of a local school. KSI Vinh opened in 2022, and is now in its second year of operation. I hope that through KSI Vinh more people will have better perceptions of Korea and learn Korean language and culture in the Vinh region.
