KSI faculty can now obtain a certificate of teaching Korean as a foreign language more easily. For the first time this year, KSIF provided roundtrip tickets and special lectures to the teaching staffs who took the ‘13th Test of Teaching Korean as a Foreign Language (TOTKA).’
Such support by the foundation comes as all the teachers of King Sejong Institutes reside overseas. In order to obtain the certificate to teach Korean as a foreign language, one must pass both written and oral examinations of TOTKA which are held in Korea. However, it is not easy for the KSI faculty who work overseas to travel to Korea and take the tests.
Since June, the foundation has recruited teachers who have already completed ‘Korean Teacher Training Course’ and wish to take TOTKA this year. In August, round-trip tickets were issued to the teachers who were to take the written examination held on September 1st. In addition, on August 29th, a special lecture by professors was held to solve sample questions from the previous examinations. Those who have passed the written exam will be provided with round-trip tickets and special lectures to prepare for the oral test which will take place on November 17th and 18th.
Since 2010, the foundation has been operating 'KSI Korean Teacher Training Course' to improve the professionalism of its faculty from around the world and majority of the teaching staffs have completed the course. As many of them found it rather difficult to take TOTKA since it takes place in Korea, KSIF has decided to support the faculty to obtain the certificate to teach Korean as a foreign language. Acting chairman of the Foundation, Kwon Oh-ki, said, "I will spare no effort to help more KSI teachers obtain their certificates as Korean language teachers.”
