The KSIF offers opportunities to obtain a degree at a Korean university for foreigners who are studying at 58 KSI around the world and dream of studying abroad in Korea.
This is the first scholarship program implemented by the foundation this year and, after a plan to elect scholars was announced last September, applications were fielded from KSI students who have either completed the intermediate education curriculum or received a certificate of Level 3 or greater in TOPIK. Applicants went through a comprehensive evaluation including document screening and video interview and, ultimately, four students, three from Vietnam (one from Hue KSI, two from KSI at Korean Cultural Center: Vietnam) and one from Mongolia (Ulaanbaatar 2 KSI) were selected.
Starting this coming March, students who have been chosen as scholars will take their first steps of their studies in Korea in their desired majors. Three of them hope to obtain degrees in media communications studies from which we can gauge how popular Korean culture contents are thanks to the Korean Wave. Hankuk University of Foreign Studies will provide the entirety of these students’ admission fees and tuition for eight full semesters to enable them to obtain their degrees without any financial concerns or burdens.
Upon being selected as a scholar, Nguyen Thu Huyen, a Vietnamese citizen, who has worked as a Korean interpreter at the KSI, despite being someone who did not major in Korean, stated, “I would like to improve my Korean abilities for the next four years to eventually increase my understanding of Korean society and culture and work as a professional interpreter.”
The foundation will continue to cooperate with Korean universities to gradually expand the number of scholarships and, thus, provide opportunities for many of the outstanding talents studying at KSI to be able to study in Korea.
