Now, in KSIF
> For the very first time in 2 African countries, 2 European countries, 3 Asian countries, and 7 yet to-be-designated countries.
> ‘KSI Seoul’ will also open as the first KSI in South Korea.
Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and KSIF (President Lee Haiyoung) announced on the 16th that it plans to open 23 new KSI locations in 19 countries. With these additions, KSI, a Korean language and culture institution for foreign nationals, will be expanding to 244 locations in 84 countries.
The 23 new locations include 14 in Asia, 5 in Europe, 2 in Africa, and 1 in America. For some of these countries, this will be their very first time hosting a KSI location, making the occasion much more meaningful. A total of 7 countries will be welcoming a KSI location for the first time. Included in this list are three Asian countries (Bangladesh, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait), two African countries (Republic of South Africa, Tunisia), and two European countries (Luxembourg, Finland).
Of the three Asian countries, Bangladesh in particular has a long standing relationship with South Korea, with approximately 2,000 Bangladeshi coming to Korea to work every year. Saudi Arabia and Kuwait were also designated as new locations based on the growing popularity of the K-wave and the enthusiasm of relevant agencies.
With these new designations, South Korea will also become the host to its very first KSI, ‘KSI Seoul.’ The National Center for the Rights of the Child (NCRC), a public agency under the Ministry of Health and Welfare, and KSI Seoul plan to work together to provide systematic Korean language and culture education for international adoptees residing in Korea.
82 organizations from 39 countries applied to be selected as a new KSI location, who went through a four-month long procedure that consisted of document screening, on-premise due diligence, and final screening. The selection criteria included the local demand for Korean language education, as well as facility and human resources capacity of the organizations, and the organizations with outstanding qualifications were selected as final candidates.
“We at KSIF find it very meaningful to be able to open locations in countries with previously low demands for Korean language education as well as in countries with widespread K-wave popularity and where multiple Korean companies have established their local offices,” said President LEE of the KSIF. She added, “We are dedicated to providing the best quality environment for education to those passionate KSI students all over the world, despite the hurdles presented by the prolonged pandemic.”
