In celebration of its 10th anniversary, the King Sejong Institute Foundation (KSIF, president Lee Hai-young) launched the “2021 King Sejong Institute Competition for Best Practice in Culture Class” to share the excellent KSI culture classes with the world.
During the competition, which was held for 25 days from January 14 to February 7 this year, a total of 69 applicants competed and a total of 10 winners were chosen after a rigorous screening process, including five materials (one grand prize, two excellent prizes, and two honorable mention) and five photos related to Korean culture.
The grand prize in the educational photography category went to Yaryyeva Maya, the director of KSI Ashgabat, Turkmenistan. Entitled “Three-year Hill,” who submitted a photograph taken during the performance based on a traditional Korean fairytale, in which KSI learners perform in traditional Korean dress hanbok. The excellence prize was awarded to Mun Mi-ran, a teacher at KSI Sokuluk, Kyrgyzstan, and Ndiangui Phyllis Wangechi, a staffer with KSI Nairobi, Kenya, and an honorable mention was awarded to Choi Mi-hee, a staffer with Dushanbe 1, Tajikistan, and Won Yu-sook, a teacher at KSI Bucharest, Romania.
The grand prize in the educational materials category was awarded to Lee Jun-eon, a teacher at KSI Vilnius, Lithuania. The work submitted by Lee is a traditional gift wrapping class using wrapping cloths in the traditional Korean color spectrum known as “Obangsaek (literally meaning five-orientation-color).” It was high praised as highly useful for other KSIs around the world. The excellence prize was given to Cheon Boram, a teacher with KSI Moscow 2, Russia, and Kim Su-ji, a teacher with KSI Irvine, USA. An honorable mention was given to O Hyeon-sang, a teacher with KSI Korean Cultural Center, Indonesia, and Hong Jong-yoon, a staffer with KSI Surabaya, Indonesia.
Lee Hai-young, the president of the KSIF, expressed her appreciation to all KSI members around the world who showed much interest in the contest,” adding, “KSIF will continue working hard to discover excellent cultural classes and materials around the world.” The KSIF plans to publish the winning works as a booklet and run an online gallery (www.kingsejong-contest.com) to make the winning works accessible to anyone.
