2021 KSI Regional Contactless Workshop Ended with Great Success

  1. Workshops held in June (Asia and Oceania), August (Americas), and November (Europe, Middle East, and Africa)
  2. Korean food, Hangeul calligraphy, folk painting, fusion traditional Korean music, traditional Korean craft of decorative knotting, and other cultural programs catering to regional needs, including practical training

The King Sejong Institute (KSI) regional workshops were held three times without personal contact due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and broadcast live from the COEX Grand Ballroom and Conference Room in Seoul for KSIs in over 80 nations across the globe. Especially, this year’s workshops were held by region separately in time in order to provide customized working-level retraining and teacher-training programs in Korean culture to meet regional needs.

Each workshop consisted of a variety of programs, including presentations of best practices for KSI operation, working-level retraining (interculturalism, K-wave, contactless Korean language teaching methods, etc.), and teacher-training in Korean culture (Korean food, Hangeul calligraphy, etc.). In addition, the workshops provided local experts in Korean language education with the opportunity to improve their teaching skills to upgrade Korean language and culture education.

In accordance with regional uniqueness, each workshop highlighted different programs in order to reflect regional characteristics. For instance, the first workshop (Asia and Oceania) focused on hanbok and K-beauty, while the second (Americas) and third (Europe, Middle East, and Africa) workshops taught folk painting and traditional Korean boudoir handcraft bojagi (wrapping cloth) making, respectively.

The last day of each workshop was devoted to discussions among relevant KSI staff members with each department to share ideas on diverse issues and culture education. The KSIF plans to incorporate the results of the discussions into the KSIF’s plans for the development of KSI operation and business.

Lee Hai-young, the president of the KSIF, said, “I hope the first, second, and third workshops held this year offered a great opportunity to share problems and solutions regarding the Korean cultural education training programs,” adding that it would be great for local KSIs to use diverse cultural education methods introduced during the workshops.
