King Sejong Institute Foundation (hereinafter KSIF, President: Lee Hae-young) holds “Invitational Workshop for Outstanding Students of KIS” non-face-to-face on October 6 and 8. For this year’s training, 240 outstanding learners selected at the beginning of the year in the KSI Korean Speech and Writing Contests worldwide are participating online.
The Invitational Workshop for Outstanding Students of KIS held every October has been an opportunity for students of KIS around the world to gather in Korea and experience traditional and modern cultures of Korea and have exchanges with each other. This year, as it is difficult to invite learners from around the world to Korea due to COVID-19, it will be held non-face-to-face.
First, in the 2021 KSI Korean Culture Exploration event held on October 6, Korean history experts, dispatched teachers, and scholarship students in Korea will deliver videos introducing famous tourist spots and history in Seoul, etc. online. In addition, in commemoration of Hangeul Day, a lecture on typography using Hangeul fonts will be given online to provide opportunities for outstanding learners of 2021 to experience and better understand Korean culture.
On October 8, the “2021 KSI Outstanding Students Contest” is held, starting with Korean traditional culture performances. In the 2021 KSI Outstanding Students Contest, the final round for “KSI Korean Speech Contest” will be held for the final ten students selected through the preliminary and main contests. In the main event, there will be not only the final speech contest and awards ceremony, but also the announcement of the final winners of the “KSI Korean Writing Contest,” in which 18 outstanding students selected from 17 countries competed against each other on September 27.
Meanwhile, a Korean Culture Promotion Contest was conducted from September 15 to October 3 for outstanding students. Participants posted information-delivering card news in Korean and their native language on their personal social network service (SNS) under the theme of “introducing Korean culture I like.” KSIF will evaluate the popularity such as number of "likes" and the level of completion to present various prizes to outstanding participants at the event on the 8th.
KSIF operates a dedicated website until the Hangeul Week in October to inform event progress and accurate schedules and to communicate smoothly with the participants (http://www.learner-sejonghakdang.com). All information about the contest and how to access the event can be found on the website.
Although COVID-19 makes it difficult for the outstanding students from all over the world to gather in one place to create precious memories, we hope that these non-face-to-face events will enhance their understanding and love for the Korean language and culture.
