On August 19, Lim O-kyeong of the Culture, Sports & Tourism Committee, National Assembly of the Republic of Korea (Gwangmyeong-gap, Gyeonggi-do; the Minjoo Party) and the King Sejong Institute Foundation (hereinafter KSIF, President: Kang Hyounhwa,) held a discussion on “The Role and Future Direction of KSI, a National Brand in the World!” via the YouTube Channel Lim O-kyeong TV.
The discussion was hosted by Lim O-kyeong, organized by KSIF, and sponsored by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the International Association for Korean Language Education, and the Korean Society of Bilingualism, the Korean Language and Culture Education Society, and the International Network for Korean Language and Culture.
The session was divided into topic presentation and free discussion. Professor Na Tae-jun of the Department of Public Administration at Yonsei University gave a presentation on the theme of “Role of KSI as a National Brand in the World and Policy Suggestions.” He suggested that this is a time when KSI needs strategies for responses and development to meet the demands of economic status and expansion of Hallyu. In addition, he emphasized that KSI needs to play a pivotal role by analyzing internal and external environments related to dissemination of Korean, such as increase in demand for Korean language learning by foreigners, attracting foreign students, and development of online platforms, etc.
The free discussion that followed was led by Professor Han Jae-young, based on three topics. Discussions followed on the topics of “Plans for Operation and Utilization of Online KSI for Effective 'Untact' Learning (Professor Kim Ji-hyung, President of Korean Society of Bilingualism), “Status and Prospects of Korean Language and Culture in the New Southern and Northern Regions (Professor Jang Hyang-sil, President of the International Network for Korean Language and Culture), and “Status and Role of KSI as a Foundation for Korean Language and Culture Education (Professor Woo Chang-hyeon, Director of Career Employment Division at Daegu University).
Meanwhile, Mr. Baek Mirzayev Ajim, a former learner at KSI Tashkent, Uzbekistan, and Zahra Al-Sapi, a former learner at KSI Manama, Bahrain, also attended the discussion. They shared their thoughts on learning at KSI and opinions.
Lim O-kyeong said, “Based on variety of opinions provided by different experts in this discussion, we will strive to develop KSI with more interest.”
