On August 12, the World Korean Educators Conference 2021, conducted in a non-face-to-face manner through our YouTube channel and Zoom with the participation of about 1,000 Korean- language teachers, was successfully wrapped up.
The conference is a training session for teachers of the Korean language and culture, held by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (hereinafter, "MCST," Minister Hwang Hee) and the King Sejong Institute Foundation (hereinafter, "KSIF," President Kang Hyounhwa), to improve the expertise of Korean educators around the world. This year, it was conducted in an 'untact' manner to prevent the spread of COVID-19, and was broadcasted through KSIF’s YouTube channel “World Korean Educators Conference 2021.”
On the first day, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Ministry of Education (Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education Yoo Eun-hae), and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Minister Chung Eui-yong) jointly hosted the K-Educator Union, in which the First Lady Kim Jung-sook gave words of encouragement to the Korean teachers.
Training was provided for Korean culture education on the second day, and Korean language education on the third day. In Korean language education, in particular, practical teaching methods were introduced, and experience sessions were provided, including various aspects of Korean culture and AI technology of the Fourth Industrial Revolution era that can be used in the changing learning environment.
Meanwhile, Professor Do Phuong Thuy of Vietnam National University, Hanoi, gave a presentation on Korean teaching cases in the “K-Educator Union,” concluding that “it was a meaningful time to share experiences of teaching Korean language and culture,” and expressed his thanks for being invited to participate in the event.
On the 12th, the final day of the conference, the winners of the contest with the theme of "Korean education in the 'untact' era" were announced, and an award ceremony was held for the prizewinners. The winner of the grand prize, the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Award, was Ko Gyeong-ran, who on the first day presented “The change to 'untact' education at KSI Tashkent 1 and my teaching methods.” The excellence awards went to Kim Su-ji of the Korean Institute of Southern California at Riverside, Kim In-ae of KSI Vietnam, and Choi Ju-yeon of Nanyang Technological University. The three excellence award winners received their awards from the President of KSIF.
Ko Kyeong-ran, the winner of the grand prize, said, “I was proud to introduce the institute and share my experiences. It was meaningful for me to look back on my teaching through the presentations of other teachers who are working hard for Korean education despite the difficult situation due to COVID-19.”
President Kang Hyounhwa remarked, “The educational objectives and targets of the Korean educators who gathered here from different time zones and spaces are obviously different, but they can rely on each other as they all speak and communicate in Korean language and culture. I hope that we can all be able to gather and share our knowledge and hearts in the same place next year.”
