The KSI in the Korean Cultural Center China provided a Korean language class from March to July, targeting the students at Peking University Elementary School. Twenty students in grades three to six who wanted to learn Korean as an elective course participated in the class
In the first lesson, the students could not hide their awkwardness. However, as time passed, those who were hesitant at first changed their approach. Although it was only one class a week for two hours, it didn’t take long for the students to get along with each other. Within a few weeks, all the students were greeting in Korean when they met their teacher.
Students were very curious about the Korean language and culture, and crowded around the teacher to ask questions during every break. They asked various questions including curiosities about how to say words that they like in Korean, or about the Korean culture they were interested in, such as K-pop. They would also ask about the Chinese food the teacher favored, or tell stories about their trips to Korea.
All of the students in the class were interested in everything about Korea, rather than just in the language. The class time always felt to be too short for both teachers and students.
We hope that the Korean class was an opportunity for the students to learn the language and gain a deeper understanding of Korea.
